when memes were posters
you bought at the record store
using a diverse array of thumb tacks
to pin it to your wall
Maybe I should stop there, but I can’t. we have lost one of the great poet musicians of any time: Leonard Cohen. As the beginning of the video shows, he knew at least he was loved. And he would say as we all should be loved. And “Anthem” so pertinent now and unfortunately in the future. But isn’t what the great poets show us: what might be…what is possible…what we fear…what we need to conjure up from within ourselves to face the present now…
there is a crack in everything
that’s how the light gets in
they’ve summoned up a thundercloud
and they’re going to hear from me
I remember the pin holes and blue spot reminders too of the tenant’s that had postered before
glad you brought Leonard into here – so many of his songs were made for this moment
“Going home
Without my burden
Going home
Behind the curtain
Going home
Without the costume
That I wore”

Just when we thought things couldn’t get worse we lose Leonard. Many thanks for this lovely tribute.

🙂 He will be truly missed…an enduring legacy that politicians can only dream about.

That’s the first thing Plato (the Younger) said to me when he introduced me to Cohen. It’s such a beautiful song… I had to smile at your poem. Drollery has never understood what a meme is. I read him your poem. NOW he gets it.

Great title.
We both wrote about “Anthem,” and it does seem apropos.

The song seems to be woven into the collective subconsciousness – and that is reason enough for hope. 🙂

Love this. Rest in peace, Leonard Cohen. I agree – poets do show us what we need to conjure up, and he did so in such elegant, powerful ways. Both in who he was, and in his words. Have you read the tribute from his son?

I’ll have to check the son’s tribute out.

Would have been a great post even if U had, but I am glad U did not. Magnificent.
